Summary:
Travel Counselors assist visitors/travelers with personalized and up to date information in regard to tourism and travel in the State of Maine.
A Travel Counselor is responsible for visitor/traveler inquiries and daily duties required to operate the center.
A Travel Counselor maintains a professional attitude with sincerity and enthusiasm reflecting Maine Tourism Association's commitment to promoting tourism in the State of Maine.
The counselor will develop and maintain Maine Tourism Association member knowledge by reading current publications, member websites, and information on www.
mainetourism.
com.
The counselor will develop and maintain a working understanding of all technologies located in the center which are placed there to assist visitors/travelers.
The counselor will stay current with local and state mandates, rules, regulations, laws and policies to be able to assist visitors/travelers.
Job
Responsibilities:
Greet all visitors in a warm, friendly fashion.
Assist visitors/travelers in whatever way possible.
Answer questions in-person, by phone or by email using appropriate literature, internet information sources or technology located in the center specifically designed for this purpose.
Give information about local weather conditions, customs, and attractions.
If applicable, accurately perform transactions involving hunting and fishing licenses, lake and river protection stickers, and lottery sales.
Maintain filing/inventory systems, both electronic and physical.
Maintain publication order system process.
Maintain publication display inventory system by following and completing where necessary processes and procedures set up for this purpose.
Light cleaning and disinfecting of all visitor information center spaces as needed.
Promote and discuss membership benefits with interested membership prospects and direct prospects to appropriate contact at the Maine Tourism Association office in Hallowell.
Ensure publication display racks and exhibits are fully stocked at all times.
Notify management of any issues with exhibits.
Alert custodian staff of any issues or situations requiring their attention.
Notify management of any irregular situations or any safety/security concerns.
Contact local emergency organizations or 911 as needed.
Gather appropriate/relevant information regarding such incidents and fill out an incident report.
Perform all center specific processes/procedures in regard to opening and closing the center.
Participate and complete all trainings as directed by the Visitor Information Center Manager.
This would include annual trainings and travel counselor trainings.
Perform all duties as directed by the Visitor Information Center Manager.
As a representative of the State of Maine, counselors will at all times maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance.
Houlton, Calais and Fryeburg Visitor Information Center staff:
Respond to potential visitor requests that come through by the toll-free number via VOIP.
Job Skills:
Ability to lift 35 pounds.
Basic computer, internet and social media skills.
Basic map reading skills.
Ability to make independent decisions when required.
Ability to collaborate and communicate with other staff, support personnel, management, association members, and center visitors on a regular basis.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to remain professional and courteous at all times Ability to work weekends and holidays as assigned; hours are flexible Excellent customer service skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment as well as maintain productivity in down times.
